The New Expansion of Dubai International Airport

Architecturally a work of art and technologically, a state of the art facility -the Sheikh Rashid Terminal is the airport of the future. The new terminal, costing US$ 540 million, is the first phase of the Dubai International Airport expansion programme. The new terminal incorporates besides the 5,400 sq.m. Dubai Duty Free, an 88-room 5 star hotel with a health club and spa, a fully equipped conference centre, 25 food outlets including a Food Court, children's play area, smoking rooms, prayer rooms, a fully equipped medical center, banks and post office. For passenger convenience, there are elevators, travellators, escalators, aerobridges, and spacious and comfortable departure lounges, quiet lounges and 14 dedicated lounges including VIP, first and business class.

The expansion programme included technological upgrades as well. Dubai International Airport now has two runways equipped with state-of-the-art lighting and landing system. The new 84 metre high air traffic control tower with its distinctive design is a new landmark in Dubai.

To herald the new millennium, Dubai International Airport has set a totally new standard in the industry in terms of services and facilities with the opening of the Sheikh Rashid Terminal. With passenger traffic increasing with every passing year - 12 million people are expected to pass through Dubai International Airport in 2000 -the Sheikh Rashid Terminal has the capacity to handle 22 million passengers annually.
